How Often Should Your Gutters Be Cleaned?
Here Is a question, answer if you can, when was the last time you thought about your gutters?
For myself, I realised it was so long ago I couldn’t remember and that’s the problem, there is a saying, “out of sight out……..”
Of all the things we clean nothing has the potential, if left unattended, to do more harm than the gutters.
A window or carpet left uncleaned will simply become ore dirty and look bad but will not harm anything. Gutters will damage your building fabric sooner or later.
Dirt, leaves and general debris land on the roof constantly it’s just the way things are and funnily enough, the worst time is summer and autumn when the rainfall is lower allowing the build-up to progress. Take a moment and think when was the last time your gutters were cleaned.
The build-up of debris will continue until something is done and a problem occurs that is pretty inevitable. Often the first sign is a leaking gutter joint. The debris traps the water leaving a constant puddle that sits there looking for a weakness and the joint is
often the first victim. The sign is pretty obvious water leaks during a storm or damp staining down the wall or cladding followed by a permanent stain as the damage goes unseen.
Left alone, and a surprising number of these problems are, the build up in the gutter will force the water to spill over the edge and either run down the face of the building or penetrate into the building itself where it may or may not be noticeable. This will cause
untold problems and misery in the future.

How Do Professionals Clean Gutters?
Gutter cleaning is something of a specialist subject here at PCC. We have two main methods to deal with the problem.
The first way is with our special “Gutter Vac” system which as you may have guessed is a vacuum made for gutters which sucks the debris directly from your gutter. Used in conjunction with a camera head we can clean some gutters from ground level. This is particularly useful on dangerous or area’s difficult to access.
The second way is literally by hand. We do use scoops and all sorts of scrapers and brushes but in the end the final polish up is probably best applied using the human hand.
On larger properties such as Factories or Warehouses, we can use a free-standing hydraulic cherry picker if it is necessary. Sometimes the gutters may be accessible from a flat roof which we can do if there is a man safe system in place which we often find is the cases on School buildings. These methods enable jobs to be carried out with the minimum of fuss avoiding scaffolding disruption and costs. Each job has individual problems with individual solutions.
However, we clean them, all the debris we have collected from your gutters is placed in bags and removed from your site to be disposed of. We then provide finished photos of the clean gutter to set your mind at rest.
How Much Does It Cost To Have Gutters Cleaned?
There isn’t a standard price as each job is unique and requires different methods. Prior to any works taking place, we will conduct a site audit to determine the most efficient and cost-effective solution for your property. Whichever method is chosen, it can be followed with a coat of specialist black sealer to upgrade the waterproofing and cure small leaks. Done at the time the gutters are clean and dry this can be surprisingly inexpensive and yet give a big benefit.
